Restart: repair instead of recycling or throwing away
From "Forest Gate Community Assemblies"
Go to the project

We throw away a lot of stuff, electronic goods, kitchen gadgets, clothes, bikes, scooters etc which could be repaired if only we knew how. All over the country there are Restart projects where local volunteers with expertise show local residents how to fix their items. See Hackney Fixers
By setting up such a project in Forest Gate we could save local residents money, offer them new skills, use local expertise and prevent items being sent to landfill.

this is a really good idea that we can all joining in. if Hackspace has moved out maybe we should invite Jay Blades, from the Repair Shop, as seen on TV. After all he is a local lad.

This is an excellent idea. I believe it would also help with the flytipping issue and the common resident complaints about bins. ("Not enough bins, too few collections" etc). Residents should definitely be encouraged to share their expertise.
It would make sense to combine this with some kind of swap shop or donation centre, so people unable to fix their items can pass them on to others. I can see local charities being part of this. There's also potential to teach repurposing, adaptation and "maker skills" as well as simple fixing. Young people are particularly interested in this side of things, and the projects would develop their creativity and problem-solving skills.

https://restarters.net/group/view/413 I've registered a group for Newham and, if I'm given some (free) space, I'll organise a kick-off meeting. Unhappily, the London Hackspace, which was/is probably the source of some extra expertise has now moved out of Hackney: https://wiki.london.hackspace.org.uk/view/Ujima_House

I think this is a really good idea! I would definitely want to participate. It fits in with one of my favourite slogans: "Think global, act local."
