Redesign the Station Road - High Street North & Romford Road Junction

From "Manor Park"

Go to the project

What: The junction of Romford Road with Station Road and High Street North needs to become more pedestrian-friendly and accessible. Realise a study for the junction's redesign that supports pedestrians, while ensuring there is no congestion caused, considering the following:

  • Improve crossings, introduce extended pavement at the street corners and colourful crossings and painting to improve the look and feel of the intersection.
  • Improve the public realm around the intersection by incorporating trees & greenery, better lighting and colour.
  • Communicate with TFL to consider changing the traffic lights timings to allow the necessary time for pedestrians to cross the street. As traffic lights are in the jurisdiction of TFL, and changes might increase delays for cars and buses, TFL will need to do a study before moving forward. Another potential option could allow for improved pedestrian times while giving buses priority. Delays to general traffic should also be considered, along with the impact on local congestion and air quality.

These ideas will further support and need to consider existing efforts realised on that junction through the Shape Newham programme, which include a vinyl on Manor Park's facade and a wind sculpture codesigned by a local artist and residents.

I would like to see the junction upgraded to include a filter lane / traffic light sequence to allow vehicles travelling east along Romford Road to turn right into High Street North. Currently right turns are not permitted - consequently all vehicles wanting to turn right there turn right into Salisbury Road in order to reach High Street North. Salisbury Road is a residential road, not suited to the level of traffic that is currently cutting through it in order to access High Street North. This through-traffic is creating unnecessary noise pollution and air pollution, for the residents of Salisbury Road. I appreciate that such a change might not be wholly within the control of Newham Council, in which case please raise this request in your discussions with TFL.

The junction desperately needs renovation. It's daunting and grim. More than that, parking restrictions need to be extended and enforced at the top of High Street North. Cars are often parked on this stretch, especially outside the school and estate agent. They often mount the curb restricting pedestrians. This needs to be dealt with before anything else and it's just a matter of enforcement. The roads are in disrepair, the pub facade is neglected, the building facades are grimy. It's an unwelcoming introduction to Manor Park.

Agree why isn’t Romford road a red route?

Enforcement of parking rules on Romford Rd desperately needed . Pedestrian crossing lights should be rephased so that pedestrians do not have to wait even thought the lights have been green for traffic for more than a full phase previously. The High St North/Romford Rd junction could have better phasing of lights for pedestrians but is less hostile to pedestrians at the moment than e.g. Rabbits Rd , Balmoral Rd and Woodgrange Road junctions

Anything that makes Romford road more pedestrian friendly! It is very difficult to cross the road and particularly at the Station road/High St N junction.

Traffic flow needs to be addressed. Trucks parking outside shops such as Ali Cash and Carry cause bottlenecks where drivers/buses are forced to give way on a busy high street! Provide more parking bays on side roads for shop loading only

Incentivise the shopkeepers not to use the pavement by reducing rent/rates slightly. Shopkeepers ruin the pavement by putting up queuing bollards, cementing wheelchair ramps etc. Ask them to use ramps that can be removed at the end of the day and in general use temporary fixtures that can be removed at the end of the day.
Again? How many times do you need to do this. Much the same as East Ham and Stratford high streets.

@Janice Gill totally agree, you see other boroughs and they do it once and properly. The re-design of the streets in the past have been outdated and not thought out well. For Eg. The stuck a tree right outside East Ham Station where its become an obstruction during busy times. Also, we have to remove the shops from taking over the pavement. Especially near busy footfall, bus stops etc.
The Romford Road cuts through a heavily residential part of our borough and Manor Park and suffers from considerable congestion as it is. It often acts as a barrier between the north of Manor Park with the station and the green spaces of the flats and the south heading towards East Ham. Greater priority for pedestrians and local traffic is unlikely to be neutral on congestion but there is too much weight given to through traffic as it is, it contributes little to the borough or the environment, and so discouraging through traffic from the route by causing a little more congestion is no bad thing to me.

Considering the heading north from this junction is the main access to the flats and so much green space, it's such a grey and unappealing junction. It would be fantastic seeing more greenery here and a way to upgrade the library building would be a big improvement.
