Public Chess Tables
From "People Powered East Ham"
Go to the project

Proposed budget
GBP 5,000
Description
This project is to have two tables each with two chess boards to be placed in Central Park, East Ham. Chess is a totally inclusive game and I believe such tables will benefit the people of East Ham as somewhere they can go with friends or to meet new friends over a game of chess. It will also add to the diversity of sports and activities one sees in Central Park.
Please note:
This project is subject to permission being granted by the Parks Team if successful

Maintenance is a good thing to budget for - well done. Where would the pieces be stored?

@Alan Bright Hi Alan, Hope you are well. The original proposal was just for the physical tables so that people could bring their own sets. However a few people have asked about sets and it something I intend to look at once we have the tables

Hi Johnathon, Apologies for not replying sooner, I've been unwell. I didn't realise there was something near Westfield. I will look into it so I can share. I organise a chess night in the Red Lion, East Ham on a Tuesday at 7pm

@Stephen Berkley it's outside m&s and Adidas. There's a giant chess board and Westfield sets up pieces until 9pm almost every day (except during events such as West ham home matches).
There are several regulars who also bring their own sets to play on the benches while waiting for a turn.

A great idea and an opportunity for more people to play chess. Already there is a community based around Westfield Stratford City

Great idea though and would support if a bit more info is provided.

What is the cost break down and price of each table? On a quick google image search of the above featured table, the price on the website is ~£550, with delivery costs it could be £2000. The remaining £3000 for installation seems a bit steep?

@Aruthy Arumugam Hi Aruthy. Thank you for our comment. I am actually proposing two tables. When I was preparing my proposal I was advised by Newham to bid initially for the full amount to cover maintenance, cleaning etc. At the open day at Newham the figure for my project was actually showing as £2975. I expect to be guided by Newham as to how much I actually get and how to use it. I hope that goes towards answering your question.
