There has been a playground in West Ham Park since1937. It welcomes approximately 400,000 children and families a year but needs a complete refurbishment. It is outdated and doesn’t meet modern standards for creative play and movement. This will take place from September 2021.
The Friends of West Ham Park (FWHP) are keen to enhance the play area with new trees and planting around the margins. The grant would cover the cost of plant and tree purchase, but the planting would be undertaken by local community volunteers of park users, adults, and children, building on the existing community involvement in the park led by FWHP.
Our aims are to -
1. Increase the biodiversity of the playground area and connect children and adults with the natural surroundings of the park.
2. Provide shade and contribute to the mitigation of air pollution.
3. Add to the existing educational opportunities in the park available to local school groups working with the Wild Schools Officer and City of London learning team.
4. Contribute to the raising of the standards of play and recreation facilities for children in our area to the absolute best levels.
