Plaistow Park Playspace Planting - £4992

From "Plaistow Community Assemblies"

Go to the project

This is a proposal to add planting between Plaistow park play-space and the high street.

The play-space is located right next to the busy high street, and so is often noisy and polluted with traffic fumes, both of which are damaging to the health of young children using the play-space.

This proposal is to add planting such as trees, bushes and shrubs and flowers on the park side of the railings at the edge of the road in order to reduce the noise and fumes reaching the playground and provide an attractive natural border to benefit the children and people passing by. Planting could also be added against the unattractive wall at the south of the play-space to provide more greenery.

Community benefit:

The proposal would provide views of nature for both children and passers by along the high street. It would help reduce air pollution and noise from the high street. It would also enhance this area of the high street, which is currently somewhat dilapidated. It would also benefit the nearby nursery.

This project aligns well with Priority 3: Parks & Greenspaces, as it is about park improvements.

This is a fantastic idea and would really make a positive difference to this play park!
A green buffer is really needed here. Children sit in the sandpit at the same level as the car exhausts going past.
Yes yes yes, this is absolutely wonderful. I wasn't too clued up on the pollution conditions of Newham, but Elle's story was an eye opening, and this project just makes soooo much sense. I really hope this is approved- very much needed.
Yes, yes, a thousand times yes. Love the playground, absolutely hate that it’s next to such a busy road with cars idling at the lights. This is super important.
This is a great idea! Fully support this!
Great idea. It would make the park feel much safer & greener.
Excellent idea that needs implementing. I always wonder why the park was planned in that location right by the road when the rest of the space is so much quieter so this planting would really go towards improving our children’s health whilst playing.

Fantastic idea. A lovely way to shield people from the chaos and pollution of the busy junction nearby. Simple and easy to implement with huge benefits for everyone in our community. Air pollution kills. Last year a court ruled that air pollution caused the death of 9 year old Ella Adoo-Kissi-Debrah in south London. A landmark decision, the first of its kind. Now let's take it seriously. This idea should absolutely form part of Newham's plan to prevent further deaths and protect the environment. I think this is an excellent proposal. Stationary traffic adjacent to the playground is noisy and polluting. It would be good to eventually see more planting throughout the park, but this would be a good start.
