Newham Plaistow After school club

From "Plaistow Community Assemblies"

Go to the project

It's devasting seeing the amount of our young people we are loosing to crime, violence, , going missing, mental health breakdown. The lockdown has really pushed numbers up.

Our young people spend a majority of their time in school/education and there's only so much the education system and teachers can do. I was a teacher for 8 years I know the pressure and strain that they carry in trying to make sure the students get the grades.

Our project is after school club - where children are thought practical life skills, to build there confidence and mental health, where there's no pressure to attain a certain level or grade, but just build themselves as individuals.

I already help in one of my local school, but with funding, we can offer more schools, and so many more children this opportunity and learn a skill that they will not learn in a classroom.

The picture attached is just 1 of the bakes that a group of year 4 students made, the sense of achievement when they make these things is life changing.

Great idea Grace. I fully support this initiative. There is a huge gap in after school provision in this area, affecting woman’s rights and equality, also children have nothing to do from 3 to bedtime. The pandemic only make the few after school clubs that existed close and we mothers still need to work until 5 or 6 pm. Grace is so talented, I would love my kids to access this resource, or anyone who needs it more. This would be so good to bridge the gap between genders, make boys and girls cook and wash up after, the sense of achievement of cookery classes is brilliant so good for their self esteem confidence and development.

@Joana Simoes thank you so much, this is so encouraging. I really ry hope we can make something work for our kids.
Fantastic idea! We need this in most areas across the borough really, as after school activities are few and far between. Practical skills are so important for young people!
@Adrienne Mathews Most definitely, If I could I would have applied to all the areas across the borough😄, but I'm based in Plaistow and hoping that this could be a start of something that will turn into a borough-wide project.
Fantastic idea. I can see what a huge benefit this would be both to our young people and their families who need excellent wrap around care.

Lovely idea Grace. Properly funded youth clubs open after school and during school holidays are much needed to nurture and support our young people. A great way to collectively support families who need that community safety net.
