Newham Opera City
From "Forest Gate & Maryland Community Assemblies 2022"
Go to the project
Our group is based at Forest Gate Learning Zone since 2012 and we are applying for funding to make a Feasibility Study on multimillion project to build Newham Opera City, located at the corner of Dames Road and Lake House Road – E7 0DL
It would be such a beautiful area to build Newham Opera City as a tourist centre for the following reasons:-
- Artists in Newham just lost its hanging area at Stratford Theatre. Our group would like to propose for a new place at part of Wanstead Heath which is in Newham territory.
- The land is so strategic for Newham Opera City, builds with multiple- purpose theatres below the giant modern Hotel, surrounded with shopping centres, sports facilities, and gardens for 25 species of birds, natural pool with ducks or Mini Zoo to preserve nature.
- Newham is well known for its Gallant Royal history and home for the famous writers, poets, painters, musicians and other artists and sportsmen. Multicultural Newham is still full of artistic-minded residents; it would be their unique and special home.
- Our group ensures that this project will benefit everyone especially the artists and tourist, business sector and Newham residents. This project will definitely uplift the image of Newham, provide better standard of living within Forest Gate area which currently, well known for its drug nests with 15% unemployment and occupied by multi-cultural disadvantaged people.
- Our group dreams to see such a derelict left-out and overlooked area, Wanstead Heath, to be built with modern Opera city which will attract artists and tourists from all over the world and raise the standard of living in Forest Gate Ward as the new pride of Newham.
- Newham is now developing fast with all the new modern flats coming up in Stratford, East Ham, Plaistow, Canning Town and Beckton. Congratulations.

I'm all in favour of bringing art and music to Forest Gate, but - forgive me - I'm a bit confused about where this would be. It sounds like it might be on Wanstead Flats, which I think is owned by the Corporation of London (not Newham)? Also, you refer to a "giant hotel" - is that something you are proposing could be built out of your feasibility study (along with the theatres), or are there already plans by someone else to build a hotel on Wanstead Flats and you also want to incorporate theatres as part of that? I can't seem to find anything online about existing development plans but would love to find out more please if so. Thanks in advance.
