Market power bollards

From "Queen's Market"

The existing individual power supplies could be upgraded to provide more power to the benefit of traders and also be used for community activities/events on non-market days. See the design brief for more details.

The problem with the market is that it is in such poor condition that it puts you off shopping there. It needs both renovation AND to look/feel more appealing, and not just for those who shop there already. Many Upton Park and East Ham residents would love to use the market but when you go, the food and hygiene standards simply aren't up to scratch, and the place itself is in a state of real disrepair. As well as exercises like this website, (which doesn't go far enough or suggest best options) we need to hear about a council strategy (co-created or otherwise) towards encouraging the sale of more sustainable produce and improvement in the selling conditions of the market substantially. I don't think these particular project suggestions encapsulate that.

This platform says it's will co-create with residents and locals and all I see is rubber stamping Newham planning department's slightly dull ideas... hardly co-creating are we...

NEWHAM COUNCIL PLEASE DO WEATHERPROOFING BEFORE COSMETICS AT QUEENS MARKET. Okay. If they have a limited amount of money. Instead of trying to make it 'look' 'pretty', lets use common sense. Even if we make it look pretty from outside to 'attract' visitors, when they go inside and get wet from roof water or walk into a puddle of dirty water, they won't be coming back. Locals who shop there will continue to shop there. There are cheap vegetables and fruit on offer for those on a limited budget and due to the pandemic we now have so many more people at food banks then before. Lets keep it simple and do the basics: * Put doors at the front and back of the market to make it indoor (This will stop pigeons and you can easily add security guards) * Make the staircase to the car park, indoor (This will stop pigeons coming in) * Remove dirty netting and fix/repair/install a new roof so no more water inside. This is priority before adding any cosmetic changes. If we really want cosmetic changes, there are some artists willing to work at a cost rate/decent rates. Please have a look at the the Wood Street walls project in Walthamstow. But again, there is no point in painting it and wasting such large amounts of money on painting, when there is so much more basics needed at Queens Market, apart from cosmetics. By adding doors, security and sorting the roof, it will weather proof the market and look after residents and traders during the rain/winter. Due to limited space, keep the canopy's at the front for some traders and make the rest indoor. NEWHAM COUNCIL PLEASE DO WEATHERPROOFING BEFORE COSMETICS AT QUEENS MARKET.
@Nisa Nimra We will be repairing the roof where it is leaking and the netting to prevent pigeons from roosting in the eaves.

@London Borough of Newham - great. Is there an alternative to the netting which looks hideous.
These would be good if there's a contraption for them to go into the ground, so the market space clear of any bollards. Decorating the market's one thing, but the bins, general way-finding, cleanliness and upkeep should also be budgeted for... or have the Council already allocate all the £4m budget?
Agreed to be funded by the traders association.

Agreed with the comments for this to be funded by traders association rather than be part of budget.

This would help remove those unsightly columns that are dotted around all over the place in the market, and would help open up the sight lines entirely.

@Fahim Chaudhry - i didnt notice the columns. I guess its a consideration but the amount involved is significant.

This will be a good idea if the traders can pay for it. There appears to be strong traders association, as this would benefit the stall owners mainly, this cost can be covered by them or a non-voluntary contribution can be sought if this option was to be pursued. This budget can be used to spend on the frontage of the market which looks horrid.
