Moving Forward, Feeling Balanced – Falls Prevention and Rehabilitation

From "Custom House & Canning Town Community Assemblies 2022"

Go to the project

Addressing all 3 priorities:

Community Safety

Youth Activities and Education

Better Green Spaces and Parks

This project combines activities for those residents who feel at risk of falls or who feel 'off balance' mentally or physically and aims to improve self confidence, as well as mental and physical health through chair based exercise, walks and more physical activity as participants progress over the course of the project - with training for young people to learn to assist in these activities during the project, with the option of taking a recognised YMCA qualification. It will make use of public parks, libraries and community spaces as well as offer home based options via zoom. Running hopefully from August 2022 to May 2023, there will be opportunity fo outdoor activity prior to the Winter months, and contact during the winter weather when many can become isolated.

Fit2RelaxLondon hopes to build on the success of 2021 at the Community Fitness Awards with this new project, supported by activeNewham and using local instructors.

@Karen Webb Green Whatever the outcome of the grant application process, the Custom House Bookshop would be interested in working with you. We already have established links with Newham Public Health department and recently arranged the visit of the Newham Health Bus to Custom House.

@Custom House Bookshop Yea I know some of the Public Health team and used to be on the Patient Group for Tollgate and pushing for more social prescribing and coordination of services. Also with my SEND and other contacts at the Autism support group, this will be an inclusive project.

@Kevin Watts Thanks Kevin The walks in Plaistow and elsewhere you organise through activeNewham really do help residents to get out, feel more confident and socialise and hopefully this project can also train more residents to support those wishing to improve their health.

I have known a number of elderly people who could benefitted from this project. A great idea, especially the combination of youngsters helping others. Nice that youngsters will receive training for a qualification, which may help in their career.

@William Goodfellow Thanks Bill I am hoping that both the community and other organisations will feel able to refer residents to this programme. The walks I have done for activeNewham and community sessions I’ve run in the past show there is a need for these types of activity, even more so post Covid where many are still struggling with their mental and physical health - both affect our balance and confidence. Hopefully combining sessions with training younger people and carers to be more confident to help with things like exercise and diet will also mean more awareness and support too.

@Jenny Mwangura Thank you Jenny, there are a lot of residents benefitting from my sessions and the activeNewham walks programmes but many older adults and younger ones I talk to and meet are still afraid to go out far on their own or join a walk through fear of falling. In winter especially keeping up with your mobility and balance awareness is so so important for all of us. I’ve fallen in the past, slipping on icy pavements and uneven paths, so it’s important for us all to improve our balance, co ordination and be able to recover mentally and physically from these.
