Monthly community litter pick

From "Manor Park Community Assemblies 2022"

Go to the project

Flats Pickers is a community litter pick. We meet once a month and volunteers litter pick on Wanstead Flats and surrounding areas. We have been running for 7 years and have removed around 2500 bags of rubbish. Between 15 and 50 people take part every month and regulars have formed friendships through the group.

We started the pick in frustration at the regular fly tipping and littering on our street and area and hope that a cleaner green space will attract more people to use our wonderful resource

We’d like to make the pick and equipment more widely and easily available and less reliant on individuals to fund running costs. We’d like to reach more people who can benefit from an increased feeing of belonging and community by taking action together in the outdoors. We’d like to be able to reward regular attendees with litter picking equipment they can take home and use in their locality and attract more new people with accessible information on how they can take part.

Funding would be spent on the admin around publicising the pick, equipment to loan and give out, a secure outdoor storage box in a front garden accessible with a code and hi vis vests printed with our info and how people can join. When people ask what we’re doing (as they often do) we’d like to be able to give them printed cards on how they can get involved. Funding could pay for a temporary banner to be put up during litter pick sessions. A small trolley would enable us to safely get equipment from my front garden to the litter pick

We believe it meets the Manor Park priorities by making our green space cleaner, removing litter to improve our neighbourhood and encourages people to meet their neighbours and take action to support nature in our area

Very impressed with your presentation and your dedication to keeping our streets cleaned. I have been living here for well over 20 years and Capel Road was in such poor state until you started your litter picking activity. I would be happy to join as a volunteer once a month and I am sure that many other Manor Park residents would love it too as we are all really enjoying a stroll on the Flats once in a while. You have my vote! Last Sunday got in touch with the Rangers because a group of people had a BBQs party in there. It was very windy and the risk of fire was very high. Here is their number in case anyone witness such activity: 0208532 1010. The rangers had a very hard time asking the group to stop it. Eventually as the group was not willing to stop the rangers tipped a full water can all over the BBQs.

@Frederic Billet Thank you for such lovely comments. You’re welcome to join us - next pick us Sunday 31st 11-12.30. Meet outside Golden Fleece. Well done for calling the rangers for the BBQ.
Excellent proposal - love coming to join the litter picks when I can, always a great reason to get out on the Flats, say hello to other people, contribute something back, and experience the changing seasons & landscape! Definitely in support of this.

What a truly amazing group of people! This is a brilliant proposal. I feel like the project should get even more funding, because the value transcends so many aspects (clean green spaces; environment; volunteering; social and well-being; and community cohesion). Gets my vote!

I support this proposal, fantastic group of people keeping wanstead flats and the surrounding streets clean. Without this group I wouldn't like to think how much litter would be left on wanstead flats.

This is an excellent idea which I support. There is far too much fly tipping on this local space which is used by people from all across Newham.

Such a brilliant idea to support this and will give amazing value for money as has been running so effectively for nearly 6 years now.

I also support this proposal, the quantity of litter has increased and it's happening all the time.

Great idea. The litter pick not only helps clean up a much loved local space but brings people together once a month!

I support this proposal. Wanstead Flats is a much used open space on the edge of Manor Park & needs to be kept as litter free as possible so people feel comfortable & safe using it. Volunteet litter pickers do a great job & need support.
