Manor Park Library
From "Manor Park"
Go to the project

What: Realise improvements on Manor Park's library building and expand its community use and cultural offer.
- Facade: Create a more welcoming entrance to Manor Park and High Street North high streets by improving the facades of the corner buildings. Align these interventions with the Shape Newham project, which includes a vinyl on the library's facade and a wind sculpture co-designed by a local artist and residents. Consider painting the walls of the building above the library.
- Public Realm Activation: As part of the wider redesign of the Romford Road intersection, the library could facilitate outside seating and activities on the extended paving on the Station Rd side during its open hours.
- Uses: Expand the library's activities relating to intergenerational peer-to-peer learning activities, from arts & crafts, local culture and history, to digital training and small business support. SEND services also to be provided as part of the library activities.

The library isn't large enough for all the purposes it has to fulfil. It does need extending in some way, shape or form, whether that be in a disused shop, or separating out the computers, more books, more research elements.

A library is such a very valuable thing, however this one is just not big enough for all the things that go on in it. There aren't enough books, computers take over a massive amount of space and the it has to accommodate so many community meetings and exercise spaces. I would like to see it expand, I don't know if the building beside it is a possibility or if not another space, perhaps a computer hub could be set up, and the library could be for BOOKS, and music . There is a paucity of serious books, nothing in terms of research or a real quiet space. It is lovely when children enter a space that is beautiful and quiet. A completely different experience.
However someone has suggested painting the building black which I personally feel would be very forbidding, and dark against the sky. Again, over brick, it wouldn't last well.

The library could and should be the focal point of Manor Park. The facade needs to be more inviting. Expanding the activities offered may certainly encourage more of the community to engage. I loved the monthly jazz sessions which where held in the library. I was surprised not to see more people attending. I hope to see these return.
I would like to see art & craft sessions for all ages & abilities along with social interest groups, story telling, board games, poetry and literary events to bring people together.

As part of a wider scheme to improve that junction, it'd be great to improve the look and accessibility of the library. It isn't immediately obvious there is this resource just on the corner. It's facade actually has some great mosaic tiles that have been unsympathetically painted over. Restoration of the outside would welcome people inside

I agree that it needs to be more welcoming.

The doors on this building at the moment are impractical. The doors open every time something passes the building. Perhaps just a manual door with disabled button would work better.

I love this idea and anything to improve the use of this great local resource, but the residents of the homes above should be actively consulted early on, particularly with regards to changing the look of their building - which I would support but it is their home.

The library in Manor Park is a massively under appreciated local resource, I am very supportive of an initiative to expand the use of the space.
