Description

This project aims to inspire and empower young people in Newham through literature, creative writing, and storytelling. By engaging participants in a variety of interactive and enjoyable activities, the project encourages young people to develop strong literacy skills, a love for reading, and confidence in expressing themselves through writing.

Activities will include creative writing workshops, where young people learn to craft short stories, poems, and scripts, exploring narrative structure, character development, and imaginative thinking. Poetry workshops will introduce them to different forms of poetry, rhyme, rhythm, and expressive language, helping them to find their own voice. Reading clubs and discussion groups will encourage young people to explore both classic and contemporary literature, fostering critical thinking and communication skills through group conversation and analysis.

To make the experience engaging and real-world, the project will invite local authors, poets, and storytellers to lead sessions, giving young people the opportunity to learn from professionals, ask questions, and gain inspiration from real-life literary careers. Participants will also take part in story-sharing events, performances, and literary games, where they can showcase their work to peers, families, and the wider community, building confidence and public-speaking skills.

The project will also incorporate activities that connect young people with Newham’s rich local heritage and community spaces, such as story walks through local parks, writing exercises inspired by local history, and community literary displays, which celebrate the creativity of young people while fostering pride in their neighborhood.

Through these activities, the project not only nurtures literacy and creative skills but also strengthens community bonds. It provides a supportive space where young people can express themselves, collaborate with peers, and gain confidence, while actively contributing to Newham’s cultural life. By combining education, creativity, and community engagement, this initiative empowers the next generation of readers, writers, and storytellers.
