Inclusive Rhythms: Dance, Art, & Community

January 2024 - Project Completion Update

Inclusive Rhythms saw the delivery of 7 monthly workshops, June to December 2024, at The Gate Library. The family orientated workshops were specifically designed to be inclusive, so children with Special Education Needs (SEN) and/or physical, learning difficulties could take part, and feel supported.

Each session has encompassed a range of activities that encouraged

Gross and fine motor skills
Creative explorations
Working with others
Turn taking

The content of the movement sessions focused on fundamental movement skills of

Locomotor skills: Jump, hop, skip, gallop, etc.
Non-locomotor skills: Balance, bend, twist, etc.
Object control skills: Catch, throw etc.

Over the 7 sessions 92 people participated, of which 1/3 had a disability, and 2/3 were under 18. Highlighting the family nature of the sessions.

Project update- September 2024

Inclusive Rhythms has started!!

Monthly sessions are now being held on the second Saturday of the month, 14:00-15:15, from June - December 2024.

Dates: Saturday: 8 June, 13 July, 10 August (venue Forest Gate Community Garden), 14 September, 12 October, 9 December

Times: 14:00 - 15:15

Where: The Gate Library, Forest Gate.

Project Description:

Inclusive Rhythms: Dance, Art, & Community, is a monthly creative movement, music, and art workshop for primary aged (5-10 years) disabled children and/or children with a special educational need (SEN) and their families or carers.

The project will provide an inclusive and supportive environment for SEN and/or disabled participants to explore movement range, creativity, and connection to others in a safe and supported environment.

Monthly sessions will run from March - December 2024. The workshops will be team taught by SEN experienced artists from two artistic disciplines.

Goals:

Offer artistic opportunities to SEN and/or disabled children and their families
Encourage movement range and skill
Encourage creativity and self expression
Support family bonding, through playful interaction

Funding will make this opportunity free to all participants and their families.

My friend really enjoyed your senior classes. This sounds good too. Will it be at the Youth Zone again? About how many kids will get to do the workshop? Will it be outside of school hours?

@Jay Smith Hi Jay, thanks for your positive comments. In answer to your questions, yes it will be outside of school hours, on weekends. The capacity/number of participants depends on space hire. I will be approaching schools/community venues for private hire of a studio space. The Youth Zone studio is current not wheelchair accessible/friendly. Gym spaces aren't appropriate as are often loud with too much echo for children with special educational needs.

@Stella Howard Thank you and yeah that makes sense, community space availability is shocking in Forest gate now. if you got your ideal space, how many kids would you want in a workshop?

@Jay Smith Hi Jay, ideally 20-25 participants per workshop. As the sessions are family friendly, that would mean around 10-12 SEND children plus carer's per session. This is an appropriate number to support learning &/or engagement needs successfully.
