Groundwork have been commissioned as our partners on this project, and we are meeting regularly with them and L&Q as landowners. We have spoken to the GLA about their tree planting plans and encouraged L&Q to engage with the GLA.
We held online and in person consultations, interacting with over 100 adults and many local children. We held 2 face to face consultations: 1 as part of our half term family fun day so that parents could easily engage, and 1 on a weekday evening so that working people could come. These were advertised through our social media, weekly e-newsletter, and a paper newsletter delivered through every door in Britannia Village.
Our online consultation demonstrated that 64% of respondents are dissatisfied or very dissatisfied with the Green currently, while only 18% are somewhat satisfied with it at present. 97% indicated that they would use it more once it has been upgraded. Provision of play features enjoyed high levels of support, with equipment for toddlers scoring slightly higher compared to equipment for juniors.
ASB was mentioned frequently in consultation. There are concerns around ASB and designs should consider potential misuse. Respondents also felt that the space would benefit from additional lighting. Features and furniture need to be robust and as vandal resistant as possible, and spaced to discourage ASB. Planting should be chosen to ensure open sight lines and planting needs to be appropriate and low maintenance to ensure it does not cause any issues in future.
Our design team are currently using the feedback from community consultation to create sketch designs for the space. We will do a further round of consultation in January using these designs, and will do capital works after this. We have applied for additional funding to cover the rest of the capital costs on the green, as well as events in the space. We hope to hear the outcome of this funding by the new year.

Our vision is to transform Britannia Village (BV) green into a well-loved, inclusive environment. BV is lacking “bumping spaces” – we have very few amenities, and the green currently feels like a thoroughfare rather than a destination. This project aims to create an intergenerational space for neighbours to meet, build relationships and share life: a true village green.
We will do this through:
Play equipment: We will work with local children to design a play area, and where possible will create opportunities for the community to be part of the building process.
Trees and greenery: We will create opportunities for local residents to connect with nature through plants - including more trees to create shade, rain cover and cleaner air. We would also like to plant flowers to create beauty in the space.
Paths: Over the past 20 years residents have worn a mud path through the grass. We will recognise this as a proper path by paving it.
Benches: We will place new benches around the green, creating safe places to sit and socialise.
This bid will be used for detailed community consultation, building a path and benches, and to secure a partner and further funding for play equipment.
