Background:

Homelessness in London, particularly in the borough of Newham, has reached alarming levels. It is shockingly easy for individuals to become homeless in this area due to a myriad of complex issues, impacting the health and wellbeing of the homeless population. Additionally, it poses challenges to community safety and has adverse effects on the local environment and public spaces. The current number of street homeless individuals in Newham reflects the gravity of the situation. These individuals face tremendous physical, mental, social, economic, and health complications daily, leading to an increased burden on local authorities.

Our Aims:

Our primary goal is to empower homeless individuals and integrate them into society, focusing on health and wellbeing, community safety, and improving the environment and public spaces. We aim to achieve this by:

Health and Wellbeing:

• Healthcare Access: Providing homeless individuals with the means to register with a local GP surgery and equipping them with a SIM card and a mobile phone to facilitate communication with healthcare professionals.

Community Safety:

• Access to Information: Granting them access to the internet to explore housing opportunities, apply for benefits, and connect with job opportunities.

Environment and Public Spaces:

• Housing Support: Assisting them in navigating the housing application process and finding stable housing.
• Community Engagement: Encouraging participation in community work to build social connections and improve their skillset.

Expected Impact:

Our initiative is expected to yield significant benefits, directly addressing the priorities of health and wellbeing, community safety, and environment/public spaces:

Health and Wellbeing:

• Relief on Healthcare Services: By providing access to regular healthcare, we aim to reduce the pressure on A&E departments.
• Enhanced Health Outcomes: Improved access to healthcare will lead to better health outcomes for homeless individuals.

Community Safety:

• Improved Community Safety: Empowering homeless individuals and reintegrating them into society will contribute to a safer community environment.

Environment and Public Spaces:

• Cleaner and Safer Public Spaces: As homeless individuals find stable housing and support, public spaces will become cleaner and safer for the wider community.

Improved Image of Local Authority:

Our efforts will contribute to a positive perception of the local authority's commitment to addressing homelessness, improving community safety, and enhancing public spaces.

By explicitly addressing these priorities in our proposal, we aim to create a more comprehensive and impactful initiative that benefits not only homeless individuals but also the broader community.
