Go to the project
Harper Twelvetrees was a pioneering Victorian industrialist, philanthropist and leading anti-slavery. campaigner who lived and worked in Newham.
His work and activities impacted the lives of many millions and was a vital element in the progress of public health all over the world.
His story, and those of so many other who played leading roles in the development of public health while operating in Newham, are not well known but are an integral part of the history and heritage of the borough.
These include the basis for the creation of the welfare state after the Hallsville bombing.
This project will document these stories and highlight the vital role they played and the public health benefits that resulted.
There will be a video created telling this story and this will be supplemented by a Teaching Pack for use in schools, libraries and community centres where the video can be shown and a talk given.
The project can be used in schools as part of PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic) teaching which will have particular relevance to pupils in Newham.
