Gazebos for the community

Description

Project Update August 2024

We have set up a community resource for Newham, based in Forest Gate. We have purchased 20 gazebos for public use. These are available for hire or to borrow (depending on criteria) by any organisation or resident group in Newham. The gazebos are very high quality and sturdy and weare able to supply weights and sides if required.

Project Proposal 2023: As our community develops, we are having more outdoor events, last year we had our first Green Fair, we also had street parties, and lots of annual events. All of them needed a gazebo to protect traders and customers from rain or sun. Our proposal is for a gazebo hire / borrow resource. Gazebos are expensive to hire, and most events have only a small budget or sometimes none. Woodgrange market lent their gazebos to 12 main events last year and lots of smaller ones. Having a central resource would allow people to use up to 20 gazebos for their event. Whether you are having a small or a large event these gazebos could make an outdoor event less stressful and more enjoyable to the organizers and the customers . If the event has a budget then a small hire fee will be charged which will be used to maintain the gazebos if the event does not have a budget the gazebos can be borrowed.

Did you go to one of these events last year, then vote for this project?

Hi all - we are preparing a report on this year’s Green Fair, the first outing for the community gazebos! We will share the report and pictures shortly! The community gazebos are also available to hire, please email for information: info@onenewham.org.uk
this would be a great resource - the Market has been amazing at lending out their gazebos - but of course Market Day is Saturday and so clashes with many events people would use the gazebos for. needs to be well 'owned' by Compost or the CFC as these sort of Community Resources can get broken really quickly if people arent instructed clearly on putting up and putting away! but good use of grant

How much money are you applying for?
@Jay Smith We are applying for £19,200 - that is for 20 high quality sturdy gazebos, a converted container to store them in, insurance and a bit of admin time.

@Susanne Rauprich Thank you for replying Suzanne, hardly anyone has. Where is the container going to go? What if the income from hiring out the gazebos doesn't cover the future costs of the insurance, admin, rent(?) after this funding ends? I have to confess I was hoping you'd fund another green fair. Is that not going to happen then? Your photo is from Upgarden. Is this an Upgarden project? You've already applied for the street library project, are you allowed to apply twice?

@Jay Smith Hi Jay, just putting it here as well as on our own project page for the book exchange, community piano and nature trail - no I believe this project is being run by Sustainable Newham (Susanne) and is completely separate from The UP Garden's project (we have a Suzanne - so we get the confusion!). Yes, that's a photo of the gazebos kindly lent by Woodgrange Market to LB Newham for their coronation event which took place at The UP Garden, but we are not involved in Sustainable Newham's gazebo project other than we think it's a good idea and will vote for them just like any Forest Gater or Marylander can. Hope that clarifies!

@Jay Smith the gazebos will be stored by Clapton CFC at the Old Spotted Dog. There will be some income from. Gazebo hire but we don’t think that will be very much. That is because we want to keep hire affordable. See UpGarden’s response re their project. We have plans for another Green Fair (May bank holiday Monday, hopefully in West Ham Park) but can’t go back for funds to People Powered Places for the same idea they funded last year. So we will put in a funding application to the lottery’s Awards for All.

@Susanne Rauprich Thank you both of you for the detailed answers. I thought you couldn't apply for the same project in the same ward, but you could in a different ward? That's how it sounds from the Whats The Point project, they got funded from 1 ward 1 year, another ward the second year, and now they're coming to Forest Gate for the third year. Anyway happy to hear about the green fair, hope you get that funding.

This will be incredibly helpful for local life. Let's keep the parties happening - and the markets, jumble trails, repair cafes, open meetings, plant sales, community art sessions, everything that strengthens our neighbourhood. I hope "big volunteer days" can use it, including some of the other projects in this cycle. More work will get done. :)
