Go to the project

we are so happy to have completed this project helping so many people in newham in need we know that it has helped a lot of families cope getting through some really tough times. We managed to reach over 3000 people a week with our free food and we hope to be able to continue this supply in the future thank you to everyone that has helped

Food bank initiative (FBI) is the project name. We are a charity called Newham community recycling aka (WOMBLES) that have been based in Newham for more than 20 years, we are well known for our reuse and recycling. Since the pandemic started we have been delivering free food to local food banks and needy in Newham. Everyday we collect food donated to us from large outlets which we deliver free of charge to local food banks. All the costs are currently covered by volunteers we collect around £20,000 worth of food per week which we are looking to increase with this ongoing project. There are many Newham residents who depend on our service as we supply around 2000 people in Newham food per week. We are considered a major food agent and the food banks have told us they would not be still running with out our donations. We are aware that the cost of living is increasing by the day and we have been advised that the number of food bank users are going up all the time.
This project aims to help anyone in need across the borough, we do not restrict postcodes we just want to help make sure no one has to go without food. If we did not collect the food it would be going to landfill waste instead many people stay healthy.
Everything we do is currently funded by our volunteers, for example fuel, insurance, van running cost, however we do not feel like this is sustainable as the people that are covering these cost are low income earners themselves that is why we are looking for some help with funding to continue our services.
update 20/01/2022 the project is going really well we are collecting more and more food each week as the number of people in need is going up by the day, bills have increased so much over the last 6 months so by supplying all the food we do helps people worry a little less as they know they can feed themselves and there family and put the extra money toward there bills
31st January 2023 We had a visit today from Jyoti to see how the process works Jyoti monitored us at the food bank and also come along to the depo to collect 3 pallets of mixed ambient ready for delivery back at the food bank and helping hands.
