January 2024, Project Completion Update

The Food Bank and Warm Haven have both continued providing much needed support to some of the most vulnerable people in Newham, thanks to the financial support from People, Power, Places. We are very grateful to everyone who voted for us enabling us to grow our provision and help even more people.

The latest snapshot figures show that these projects help more than 1400 people every single week, through the provision of food, toiletries, cleaning products, women's sanitary products and for many of the people who come along, some companionship and fun.

We are very grateful to all of the volunteers, supporters, donors and of course to Newham and their staff.



Original Request for Help:

The Carpenters' and Docklands Community Centre desperately needs funding to continue and expand our Food Bank and Warm Haven.

These projects support some of the most vulnerable, disadvantaged and lonely people in Newham, opening three mornings a week providing food, hygiene products, cleaning products, advice and a friendly place to anyone who feels they could do with the help. We support the elderly, rough sleepers, students, refugees, asylum seekers, families and individuals struggling with the cost of living.

We offer advice, care, sympathy and support. People attending our Warm Haven can have a hot shower, charge their devices, enjoy some company with some hot food and drinks.

All of this costs money and we are also struggling with increased prices of energy and food etc, so we would appreciate your support and votes so we can continue these important projects.

Happy New Year Everyone! The food bank continues to get busier and busier with our latest data snapshot showing we are helping to support just over 1200 people every single week! This is why we are so grateful for all your votes and this funding which means we are able to continue supporting people who need the food bank.

    Hello All, Just to update you that the Food Bank and Warm Haven are both going very well but we still need donations! Demand has continued to increase and we are struggling to keep up. We desperately need tinned food as a reserve for the periods when we are particularly overwhelmed or have a lower-than-usual rate of food donations from our supporters. Thanks to Newham's People, Power, Places grant and your votes, the logistical side of running the project is covered for a few more months so thank you all for helping us to support the people most in need in Newham.

        What is being undertaken should be welcomed by all. It seems to me a life saver. But they have found themselves in the very position that those for whom they provide warmth and the facility to chare their devices- victims of the cost of electricity. I didn't know such a place exists because I have had to conclude I need to find a job, at 70 years old, one who the Jobcentre signed off work 19 years ago, to pay for electricity, with the idea of just being away from home and not having to use electricity. I must put on the heating because I have a very low tolerance threshold for the cold, like those affected by diabetes. Even though this is one fan heater when I am sitting down and lying down, for the first time in my life I have been counting pennies since last autumn. In addition, I have had no running hot water for 3 years, so no electricity is being utilised by the water heater, I do not washup in the dishwasher nor wash clothes in the washing machine. I cook on a one burner, similar to a ceramic hob and once or twice a week, sometimes no day in a week. I do not iron now, for years. I could see the service being closed or very reduced when I compare my situation as one person with a completely different way of life to the way it was, full of activities that utilised electricity and yet not being able to pay for such a vast reduced usage.

          @Olivia Irving I am sorry to hear of your situation but it is sadly becoming increasingly common. You are certainly welcome at our Food Bank and Warm Haven on the three days a week it is open. We also have hot showers, towels, shampoos etc you can use at our centre. We can also refer you to other Havens open on other days in the area and see if there are any other ways we can help.

            @Ben North Hi Ben. I was sent your response by this organisation. Could you give me some details of your operation? Like the what and when and where. It seems one of your operations is near me, if I am correct. Is it the community centre right next to where the GP surgery used to be? The same surgery having move to the High Street but still very near to the centre? You're in E15 and near to E20? Olivia

              @Olivia Irving Hi Olivia, We used to run the food bank from the TMO Community Centre which also housed the GP Surgery but have moved it back to our Community Centre now. The full address is The Carpenters and Docklands Centre, 98 Gibbins Rd, E15 2HU. We are in the corner of the Carpenters Estate closest to the tube station.
