East Ham Explorers

Proposed budget

GBP 20,000

Description

East Ham Explorers proposes to support people in our community to enjoy wild and outdoor spaces in and around Newham and England, supporting their physical and mental wellbeing. We will be running community day trips to National Heritage sites and other fun and exciting destinations in southern England.

We aim to encourage reduced car use, by having a central meeting point from which we set off, for those who may not be confident to travel by public transport otherwise. It also allows the many who don’t own cars to access places they would otherwise struggle to get to.

Our project proposes to support people in our community to get to know one another through our day trips. This frequent attendance at events aims to not just introduce people, but to build long-term connections and friendships across our diverse, but often poorly integrated population.

The locations have been selected to have cross generational and gender appeal, with some very local which can be accessed by bus and tube. Some further afield by train and coach. Some predominantly indoor visits for the colder months and others which are more outdoor focused for the warmer months.

The locations that we have polled to be most popular include

Hertfordshire Zoo

Anglesey Abbey, Gardens and Lode Mill

Jurassic Coast

Warwick Castle

Kew Gardens

Houses of Parliament

Margate

We plan to end the project with a 2 night trip to the Isle of Wight, hiring out an entire youth hostel, running yoga classes, communal cooking with a fun evening of games and days walking and visiting local landmarks and natural spaces.

This is a fantastic initiative that promotes wellbeing, strengthens community connections, and makes natural and cultural spaces more accessible for everyone. The mix of local outings, larger trips, and a culminating residential makes it an inclusive and thoughtfully designed project.

This is an excellent initiative from a very well run group which has created many opportunities to get to know my neighbours and develop a sense of belonging with my local community over the past couple of years, including a camping trip in 2024. These have really enhanced my experience of living in East Ham as a relatively new resident - and this at a time when many people are struggling to make social connections, so I would like to give this bid my wholehearted support!

I’ve taken my kids and my nieces to the camping event at Debden last year which was very well organised (food, activities provided) and had a lovely atmosphere. For many of the families there, it was the first time they’d been camping (tents were provided etc)

The Eastham Explorer Group plays a really positive role in the local community by giving young people opportunities they might not otherwise have. Through trips to places like Kew Gardens, the zoo, and science exhibitions at the ExCeL Centre, the group opens the door to nature, wildlife, and hands-on science in a fun, accessible way. These outings help build confidence, spark curiosity, and bring kids together in a safe, welcoming environment. By keeping activities affordable and inclusive, the group makes it possible for families of all backgrounds to give their children enriching experiences that support learning, wellbeing, and a stronger sense of belonging in the community.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the trips that my children and I attended with the East Ham explorers, one to Kew Gardens and the other to New Scientist Live exhibition at london’s Excel centre. We loved the trips and enjoyed meeting other families in the area to so something they would not have had the opportunity to do. They were both very popular; well organised and they brought hundred of people from the local community of diverse cultures together. The East Ham explorers group is an asset to the local community, it is giving people and families the opportunity to be a part enriching events that they may not have the resources to attend otherwise. It helps all cultures in the community to integrate and meet new people of different backgrounds, this in turn improves people’s well-being and the borough as a whole.

This group is dedicated to fostering unity and understanding among individuals from diverse backgrounds by organizing activities and trips that bring communities together. Through shared experiences, it aims to create bonds that transcend cultural differences and promote mutual understanding. Our children are also actively involved and benefit from learning about diversity and inclusion in a richly diverse community environment, fostering beautiful connections and relationships that will last a lifetime.
