Description

The Companions project addresses a pressing concern within our community— the isolation and loneliness experienced by senior citizens in Newham after retirement. Sadly, our previous efforts to alleviate this issue have proven unsustainable without vital funding. This prompts our application for support.

Specifically focusing on the Forest Gate and Maryland areas, Companions strives to enhance the Health and Well-Being of our senior citizens, a target demographic often overlooked. As they transition into retirement and their familial responsibilities diminish, many find themselves grappling with a sense of disconnection and reduced purpose in society.

The essence of Companions is to establish a recurring social club that brings together these seniors. Through this initiative, they can engage in discussions, partake in gentle exercises, enjoy snacks, and ideally, share a nourishing hot meal once a week. Additionally, we envision organizing dedicated days when health professionals visit, to educate them on prevalent health concerns within the South Asian community, including Diabetes, Blood Pressure, Cholesterol, and Dementia.

The funding we seek would enable us to reinstate and sustain Companions, reigniting a source of solace and connection for our senior citizens. By nurturing this project, we not only combat loneliness but also actively contribute to improving the overall well-being of a marginalized yet significant segment of our community

Good luck. Amuch needed project
Great initiative. The elderly often get overlooked in social aspects. It's very important as they get older, and as things generally get a little bit more difficult, that they have an outlet such as this. Hopefully this will bring some goodness to all those who choose to attend.
The companions project is for all those locals who are over 65 years old and retired resident in forest gate and the wider Newham community. The address is a local mosque and community centre and the community centre will be used. This project is not for Muslims only but for the whole community. Our sessions will run weekly (every weds) with hot food provided alongside snacks, activities and companionship

If you need a free outdoor venue (maybe for some outings for your seniors?), The UP Garden might be able to help! Check us out on www.theUPgarden.org and use the contact form to get in touch. Good luck with your project!

Don't know if anyone from newham council is reading this but there are too many similar projects. There is :- 1 ) Radha Krishna social club for elderly Hindus at one of their temples - yoga, discussions 2) Milap social club for elderly Hindu women - yoga, exercise, music, outings 3) Companions social club for elderly Muslims at their mosque - exercise, health discussions, hot meals 4 ) Silver Connections social club for elderly Asian women at the library - yoga, hot meals 5) Stay Strong Stay Young strength classes for elderly people at the library - exercise, health discussions, cultural activities 6) Seniors Got Talent creative workshops for elderly people - health discussions, music, art How is the council going to ensure that nearly one quarter of the funding won't be spent on 6 similar projects? And like every year there are multiple greening projects too (7).

@Jay Smith Sorry the amount has just popped up it wasnt there before. 292-296 Romford Road is the mosque in the old cinema isnt it? So is this social club just for retired Muslims? Or can anyone come regardless of religion, race, culture, language? What will £14778 be spent on? How many sessions? How many places at those sessions? You talk about reinstating so did this club use to exist and why did it stop?

@Jay Smith I would still like to know these answers. I'm not going to give my vote to anyone who can't or won't explain how my money will be spent, or anwer these questions about how the project will actually work.
@Jay Smith Hey Jay, looking at Umars comment above, it looks like it'll be once a week and open for everyone, not just Muslims. Umars message says it's a community centre I believe. Some sort of food and some activities I'm guessing for those who attend too.
