Clothing Poverty is a huge issue in Newham. Every week we have requests for clothing for adults and children who live in poverty, are victims of modern day slavery, domestic violence or are homeless. We currently have a Baby Bank but don't have the capacity to ensure that we meet every request for clothes for children over the age of 5 or adults. This project aligns with the priorities of safer and cleaner neighbourhood and the environment. It would be delivered in both East Ham and Stratford and also addresses the priorities of improved health and wellbeing. The community wardrobe would support people to have dignity and choice with accessing clothing.

Where will you source the clothes for this project? So many clothes which are wearable go to landfill, it seems wasteful and unsustainable to buy new clothes.

@Laura Holland hi! Great question! We get tonnes (literally) of clothes donated to our East Ham and Stratford churches every month. Currently we can't process it all here so a lot of it goes to charity shops or is recycled - none of it goes to landfill. Part of our aim is that we want clothes that are donated locally to go to local people to reduce transportation environmental factors. We also get requests several times a week to collect clothes and we can't at the moment because we don't have a van.

@Lee Raggett Hi! I help at the BHF charity shop in Stratford- they send hundreds of bags to the ragman every week, much of which is quite wearable, I thought I might ask to go through it if you have an idea what sort of stuff you want- thy only get pennies for a bag I think. Also if you have clothing which needs minor mending I'd be happy to help- I sew for a living but only work part time.

@Laura Holland similarly we get a small amount for the clothes that are taken from here, it helps us buy nappies for families in need but isn't a lot! It would be lovely to have a conversation with you about sewing!
