Community Parklets/Information Hubs

From "Manor Park Community Assemblies"

Go to the project

There are several popular access points to Wanstead Flats used by parents with buggies, people on bikes & less able bodied people, but these are often blocked by cars, making access difficult. We would like to create parklets designed to prevent cars from parking at these locations & allow access for buggies, wheelchairs & bikes (including cargo bikes & trailers). They would also be information hubs & possibly provide bike parking & some nature-based activities for children & perhaps a book exchange.

Commercially installed parklets cost a lot of money, but many have been created all over London by communities at much lower costs. We would include planters with wildflowers & grasses to encourage bees and other pollinators.

This project would create greener public space, & encourage bees & pollinators for biodiversity. If we can incorporate bike parking and encourage people to visit the Flats by bike rather than by car, this would be beneficial to the local environment by reducing air pollution & encouraging a more active form of travel.

This idea came from discussions on our neighbourhood WhatsApp group, which has nearly 100 members, but the project will benefit many more people visiting the Flats which have become so important to Newham residents during the pandemic.

As we have seen over the past year and a half access to the flats is really important for people and this initiative would help people to get onto the flats.
Great idea. Access points to the Flats are regularly blocked. This is a green solution to the problem which supports LBN aim to improve local environments.
Another great idea! It would make the flats a lot more easier to access and friendlier overall
Clearly defining access points to the flats by restricting car parking across them is an excellent initiative. Those arriving by bike can currently either squeeze through the cars or access from another point and ride along the flats. There are already well defined desire-lines for access from the road and it makes sense to formalise these by protecting access.. This could also have the advantage of encouraging access to bikes, pedestrians, prams and wheelchairs while restricting vehicle access and reducing potential for fly-tipping etc.

Definitely support this - I often have to ask drivers to move forwards or backwards to allow access to Wanstead Flats without having to back into the hedgerow. Also incorporating bike parking may help the car parking both sides of the street at weekends which causes severe congestion, lots of hooting and arguments between drivers.

This is a brilliant idea. It would encourage cycling and walking, improve biodiversity, and raise awareness of issues related to sustainable use of public spaces. It could become a community hub, providing much-needed seating and improved access to the Flats for less mobile people, as well as nature-based activities for children. I would happily volunteer to help create such a parklet.

Brilliant! There are so many more productive and healthier things that can be done for the benefit of a greater number of people with the public land currently given to a small number of people who own cars who want to store their property for free or next to nothing. This kind of project is low cost and high impact in terms of its immediate and ongoing benefits and should therefore be a no brainier in terms of gaining immediate approval.

This is a fantastic idea as it’s very hard to get on the flats with a bike or in an wheelchair and this would make a huge difference as cars often unintentionally block the easiest access points. It would also encourage people to come to the flats in healthier ways!
