Colours of Manor Park
From "Manor Park"
Go to the project

What: Develop a programme that enables the council to identify feasible sites for murals and work with local artists to develop them, highlighting the history and identity of Manor Park.
- Identify council-owned assets that would be ideal locations for murals on the high street.
- Develop a borough-wide process for the council to work with building and business owners, who want to offer their blank walls or shop's shutters to be used for a mural. Consider issues around mural maintenance in the long-run.
- Talk to TFL for the potential of creating a design for the two empty billboards on the Manor Park Station, welcoming residents and visitors.
Where: along Station Road and north part of High Street North

One of the main issues I find is the violent brightness of the signage of all the shops. All a bit overpowering. You would have to be careful with painting brickwork as it would need a fair bit of maintenance, and could look very run down in a few years. I think begin with the most important elements.

There are many professional artists in Newham and before the current fencing was put up around Manor Park Community Garden , it was surrounded by large printed panels made by an artist. I have done similar work in other parts of the borough. There is an enormous pool of artists in this borough, it has always been a place for creatives, however the more expensive it becomes, the more difficult it is for them to survive.

Yes! A lick of paint to previously rendered shop fronts would make an instant impact to our high streets. The model has already been proven to work in nearby Leyton. Simple, sensitive redecoration in keeping with the heritage of the area would make areas feel brighter and help to elevate local businesses.

It would be great to see the buildings along Station Road and alongside the Broadway painted in pastels colours. It would be good to see some tasteful murals and mosaics placed here and there.

Starting with Station Road, repainting some of the buildings and shopfronts would give an instant lift to the area on a street so many pass along. There are plenty of attractive Victorian features that could be improved. Adding some colour or pattern to the blank metal shutters would help add more identity to the area.

This is a great idea. (I also love the painting brick fronts idea similar to Leyton High Street.) Is it possible that these can be proposed not just for this area but elsewhere on Romford Road or High Street South too? The love for MP needs to be spread a little! As much of these brilliant ideas are focusing on one spot when there are other areas in much worse existing condition.
As an artist, I feel the need to point out that an adequate fee needs to be offered to any artists asked to submit design proposals and a separate additional fee to the chosen artist undertaking the project. Artists need to be paid too! Bow Arts Studios in the Old Manor Park Library house local artists and it might be worth contacting Bow Arts Trust for a list of contacts.

@Lilah Fowler I really agree with you, the area around the station is only a tiny part of manor park, and it would be deeply disturbing if the energy was focused here, an area which is relatively privileged compared to other spaces. There is always that struggle between 'famous' artists, and local artists. But make no mistake, local artists have done some amazing work and you probably wouldn't want Anish Kapoor's Arcellormittal in the street, a bit too big! You always need to think why you want a mural or a sculpture, and if there isn't a good enough reason, it is just 'plop' art.
What ever is painted needs to be maintained, as soon as something gets grubby, it looks worse that brickwork. How would things be maintained. Also already, shop signage is often 'very loud', and add in street signage, there could be alot of conflict, things need calming down, simplifying, low maintenance. I would be worried about pavements full of planters, trees that might well struggle to survive, in such an unhealthy landscape as the Romford road. Scaling back, simplifying, doing one thing, then see how it affects everything. An organic approach is needed.

I could help with this! I'm a curator and Director of Deptford X Festival in Lewisham Borough - commissioning artists to make work in the public realm. Would love to support a similar initiative in my local borough and support local artists to get their voice heard.

@Nathalie Boobis amazing! I bet there are a few people we could ask and have some brilliant work around!

I love the idea in principle, but am dubious as to the quality of the artworks. Some instances of murals and street art can be unprofessional looking and don't raise the profile of the area, so I'd like to see local residents who work in the art industry judging the best from submissions.
