Cody Dock Community Forest Garden - £12,800
From "Custom House and Canning Town Community Assemblies"
Go to the project

We will build a 70m long brick lined Forest Garden along the public footpath that runs through Newham's Lea River Park and Cody Dock. We will plant fruiting trees, wild flowers, install heritage and ecology information and interpretation boards, seating and new street lighting, working with local schools, community volunteers and young kick starter apprentices. This permanent installation will replace the temporary timber planter garden that was built by 300 community volunteers in 2012 and which is now beyond reasonable repair. In addition to making this gateway to the Lea River Park safer and more inviting, this new public garden will provide a resource for ongoing community volunteering, ecology and permaculture studies.
The project will take place at Cody Dock in the ward of Canning
Town North and will provide:
• over 200 community volunteering opportunities for Newham
residents
• 4 kickstart apprenticeship placements for young unemployed
Newham residents
• A natural carbon sink to help tackle poor air quality and the
effects of climate change
• Provide an education resource for local schools and our own
citizen science program
• Will make significant improvements to the public realm
