Circles of Strength

Building Resilience and Connection in Beckton

Circles of Strength is a resident-led initiative in Beckton, Newham, designed to improve resilience, wellbeing, and social connection. Through three weekly activities, it offers safe spaces, positive role models, and accessible opportunities for residents of all ages to thrive.

The Challenge

Beckton residents face multiple challenges – limited safe spaces for young people, high levels of isolation among women, and barriers to affordable wellbeing activities. Without solutions, many residents risk poor health, disconnection, and reduced life chances.

Our Solution

  • Saturday Youth Circle (ages 7–18)

Dialogue, creative activities, and mentoring to build confidence and resilience.

  • Saturday MMA Sessions

Open to all residents, promoting discipline, fitness, and mental wellbeing.

  • Wednesday Women’s Circle

A safe space for connection, peer support, and wellbeing workshops.

Why This Matters

The project supports Newham Council’s People Powered Places priorities by promoting health, enhancing safety, building an inclusive economy, and fostering neighbourhood trust and cohesion.

Impact

• Engage 500+ residents in the first year across all activities.

• Increase physical activity, resilience, and self-confidence.

• Reduce isolation by creating strong peer networks.

• Empower volunteers and local leaders to sustain the project.

Sustainability

Sessions will be delivered by trained facilitators and local volunteers, with pathways for residents to develop skills in mentoring, facilitation, and coaching. This ensures the project grows community capacity and continues beyond initial funding.

Vote for Circles of Strength – and help build a resilient Beckton, together.

Circles of Strength is an outstanding resident-led initiative that responds directly to the needs of the Beckton community. By offering structured weekly activities that support young people, women, and residents of all ages, it creates safe spaces where wellbeing, resilience, and confidence can grow. The programme is thoughtfully designed. The Saturday Youth Circle provides mentoring, creative expression, and dialogue — building self-esteem and emotional resilience in children and young people who often lack positive outlets. The Saturday MMA sessions are an innovative way to promote both physical fitness and mental discipline, especially for residents who struggle to access affordable wellbeing activities. Meanwhile, the Wednesday Women’s Circle offers invaluable peer support, reducing isolation and giving women a trusted space to connect and learn. This initiative strongly aligns with Newham’s People Powered Places priorities by improving health, enhancing safety, and strengthening trust and cohesion within the neighbourhood. The emphasis on positive role models and accessible opportunities helps create better life chances for those who might otherwise be overlooked. The projected impact is significant — engaging over 500 residents in the first year, increasing physical activity, reducing loneliness, and nurturing community leadership. What makes Circles of Strength especially powerful is its focus on sustainability: residents are supported to develop skills in mentoring, facilitation, and coaching, ensuring lasting change and local ownership. Overall, Circles of Strength is not just a set of activities — it is a community-building movement that improves wellbeing, fosters connection, and empowers local people to lead.

Circles of Strength is a fantastic community initiative that brings real value to Beckton. By offering safe, inclusive spaces for young people, women, and local residents, it tackles some of the most pressing issues in the area, including isolation, lack of youth provision, and barriers to wellbeing activities. The blend of creative workshops, mentoring, fitness, and peer support creates a well-rounded approach to building confidence, resilience, and community spirit. It’s refreshing to see a resident-led project that invests in local talent and develops future leaders. The focus on sustainability and skill-building means the benefits will continue to grow within the neighbourhood. With its clear alignment to Newham’s priorities and huge potential impact, Circles of Strength is a project well worth supporting.

Circles of Strength is exactly the kind of community-driven project Beckton needs. The focus on resilience, wellbeing, and connection across different age groups is inspiring. It provides safe, supportive spaces for young people, women, and residents who may otherwise feel isolated. The mix of mentoring, creative activities, and fitness sessions creates real pathways for personal growth, confidence building, and better physical health. What stands out most is that this initiative is resident-led and builds local leadership, meaning the impact will continue long after the initial funding. By empowering volunteers and fostering trust within the neighbourhood, Circles of Strength strengthens the fabric of the community. This project clearly aligns with Newham’s priorities and has the potential to engage hundreds of residents, reduce isolation, and create meaningful positive change. Truly deserving of support and a brilliant example of community power in action.
