Update December 2021
Since receiving Community Assemblies funding in October 2021, we have delivered:
- 2 Community Litter Picks
- 9 Forest School Sessions
- 11 Forest Play Sessions
Our litter picks were a great success, improving the appearance of the park and making it more safe for users. We were joined by residents of Beckton, Royal Docks and Custom House, a local primary school, Newham Council and some of our Forest School families to clean up Beckton District Park South.
Our Forest School Sessions are adult led and have included identifying plants, making tea from foraged plants, making natural beads, shelter building, camouflage games, using ropes, a mud kitchen and campfire building and cooking.
Our Forest Play Sessions are child led and give children an opportunity to engage in risky play and explore their natural curiosity with other children in a mixed age group. They have hunted for bugs, climbed trees, explored the forest and built strong friendships.
We have engaged with over 105 local families. Over 45 families have attended our sessions, including over 83 children between the ages of 0 and 11.
From January to March 2022 we plan to deliver…

- 6 Forest Play Sessions
This will include sessions during the February Half Term, as well as more campfire building and cooking sessions.
We also plan to do some planting in our Forest School sessions in 2022, including planting a willow dome shelter in Beckton District Park South.

Beckton Nature Play is a group of parents and children who join together for weekly outdoor learning and play sessions in Beckton District Park South woodland. We would like to improve the park and make quality outdoor education sessions accessible to more families in Newham. We also aim at making the park cleaner and a more inclusive space by reducing litter and fly-tipping. We would deliver a mix of self-directed and structured learning and play sessions for Newham families, involving local schools, home educators and parents in general. Our sessions would be in mixed age groups, some will be aimed at entire families and some will be mainly for children. We will have a weekly daytime session during term time and more sessions a week during school holidays for both - under 5s and school age children.
We will have facilitated and unfacilitated sessions with some of the topics:
Bush craft and sustainable living
Sociocratic circles for co-designing student led nature activities
Forest school and camp fire cooking
Co-designing and planting a perennial mini food forest
Old enough to save the planet! Small changes for all
Foraging walks for all the family
Planting a willow dome rain shelter
Litter picking and keeping the park clean
