Ascension Community Trust Gardening Project

From "Custom House & Canning Town Community Assemblies 2022"

Go to the project

Our project has three aims. Firstly to continue developing our community garden space as a resource for the wider community. Secondly to engage community groups in attending particular projects. This includes visits from local schools and children’s groups from after school care. Thirdly for the garden volunteer team to take part in local projects to improve green spaces in the local area. This would involve group projects developing identified areas of community space through planting and light landscaping. This project supports 'Better Parks, green spaces & Natural Environment' in the local area but is also relevant to ‘Youth activities and Education’ priority. We have already hosted visits from a local community initiative and a local school and already have volunteers who would be interested in connecting with others to identify and improve currently unused flowerbeds or soil patches which could be revitalised with fresh plants and flowers. This would have the added value of building new community connections and local ownership over green space. Access to nature and gardening have many benefits including physical and emotional wellbeing. It also is a great way to meet others and build relationships.

With the very popular project on Newham City Farm site having been first accepted and then declined, your project is also a great way to give access to local schools to a safe, enclosed, managed green space outside the school environment and to engage with other community groups.
    Excellent project!
      Great project Tom.
