Lighting for a Safer Town Centre
From "People Powered Forest Gate & Maryland - Finished"
Go to the project

Proposed budget
GBP 20,000
Description
This project has been completed. People feel safer around the premises as lighting has been installed and the area is no longer dark at night. It is noticeable that there is less antisocial behavior in the area.
Lighting has been installed at different levels and different points in the premises that comes on after dark. We are in the process of installing a metallic barrier to codon-off a particular area that is a favourite spot for those loitering after dark.

We are really happy with the progress made on this project. The premises is now well lit up at night, and those passing by feel much safer.

I agree that the area needs lighting. It would make me feel much safer at night.

Lighting will not only increase community safety but this beautiful historic building would be enhanced by being well lit. Emmanuel Church is a place of worship but also a community space where other activities take place. These serve the wider community and this move will make it a safer and more appealing corner of Forest Gate.

@Ellie Burkett What activities take place in the outside space of the church?

Lighting plays a crucial role in creating a safer environment, whether its a home, in the streets, or in public spaces and the Church is one such space which can benefit from a well-lit compound which is a community space for one, and all, irrespective of your faith.
Lighting reduces accidents, deter criminal activity and provides safety. Lets collaborate and rally behind a worthy cause to enhance community safety.

I think this is a very positive next step in what Emmanuel Church is doing to make their churchyard a community green space - opening the area around the church for spending time there in the evenings. Unlike the removal of the gravestones that we set up in memorial a long time ago without any graves beneath them, this seems like a non-issue for expanding a green space initiative.

@John Harrison Are the lights for people to hang out on the grounds in the evening? I thought the lights were to put off people doing exactly that. And what are you on about "no graves", why else would there be gravestones there?

You must be joking, you just had £20k and all we have to show for it was the removal of the gravestones (which is known as DESECRATION). No flowers, no play area, one jolly for church members on King Charles coronation and that's it. What happened to the rest of the money?
Lighting will just make wrong'uns move around the back of the church where they can't be seen from the road. If you are worried about people taking a dump in the churchyard maybe campaign for the toilets next to Iceland to be reopened?
Church renovations/improvements should be paid for by the church, not Newham taxpayers.

@Mike Andrews I didnt know this and now I've just had a look at their other projects and actually they had £20000 the year before, so if they get this money then its £60000 total on church facelifts. And for that matter where is the "play area and green oasis" because I can't see it. They gave one update last year, none the previous year and neither explained how the money was spent. Is anyone from newham council on here who can give us the breakdown as the church isn't going to.

@Jay Smith Sorry the amount has popped up now but it wasn't there when I asked. How is this £20000 being spent? How much on the barrier and how much on the lights? How many lights?
I can't work out whether you want the community to use the grounds in the evening or not - you say the lighting will put off unwanted loiterers in the grounds (actually I dont think it will), and be nicer for passersby. Then one of your congregation comments that the lighting will allow people to spend time there in the evenings. So is the lighting for people to hang out there or for the passers-by?
You know that the prostitutes, drug users and homeless people that you are complaining about are also part of the community. Personally I think you should be asking for money (but not from this CIL money!!!) to fund a homeless shelter, and support services for prostitutes and drug users, not £20000 for some lights. Why don't you help these people instead of trying to shove them off elsewhere when you know there's nowhere else for them to go?
Also having seen someone else's comment, your coming across like your treating this scheme like a hand-out. £20000 every year for 3 years? I thought this CIL money was for local residents and community groups who aren't eligible for grants and stuff to add nice things that they want to see in the area. Your a charity, there are loads of other grants you can apply for to fund your church facelift.

@Jay Smith Bit rude of you not to answer anyone's questions. Comes across like you know you're going to get the money anyway so don't need to justify your project. Other projects are answering.

@CHIGOR CHIKE It doesn't matter how much support you already have, you should be transparent about your plans for the project and willing to answer my questions like the other projects - they are fair questions. You have dodged all of them. You are presuming I can just pop into the church, maybe I am asking on this platform because I cant get to you easily and anyway isnt that what this platform is for? So much for community engagement.
