Description
I want to set up a travelling puppet theatre in Canning Town, performing a programme of seasonal puppet shows. The purpose of this work is both therapeutic and fun. The slow, gentle pace and the beautifully enchanting nature of the shows, leave space for the children to use their imaginations, breathe deeply and sink into the story. It's an antidote to today's fast-paced, jarring and unhealthy images which children are over exposed to on television, video games and Youtube.
Ferried from breakfast club, to school to afternoon care and then placed in front of a television, with news of wars, economical crises and horrible crimes, puppetry is a calming and healing gift for children. We can help children by telling them stories that intentionally bring back a sense that all is well in the world.
My vision is to work out of a quality tipi-style tent, moving around local green spaces performing puppet shows as I go. Part of the attraction of children stepping into a 'tipi-theatre' is the sense of enchantment, cosiness and an escape from the outside world. Being surrounded by nature aligns with the seasonal theme and brings the outside world in, grounding the child in nature.
