A playground near Manor Park Station / North of Romford Road

From "Manor Park Community Assemblies"

Go to the project

Manor Park desperately needs a decent playground to cater for the growing number of young families in the area. It is currently a very long walk to get to a playground - but these spaces are vital for children's development and health and are also a space for parents to meet and connect. Done properly it can be a real community hub.

A possible site is the corner of Manor Park Flats opposite the station - there is precedent for this already on the flats over in Forest Gate opposite the Holly Tree pub. By using materials which reflect and blend into the natural environment it would add to, rather than detract from, this green space, and discourage the antisocial behaviour which currently takes place in this corner of the flats (people often loiter here to drink and smoke drugs).

There is already huge local support for this idea via the Newham High Streets programme where it has been one of the most popular ideas submitted: https://newhamco-create.co.uk/en/ideas/playground

This is such a great idea. A playground on this site or nearby would make a massive difference to the health and quality of life of the many children who live in Manor Park, in particuarly those living in temporary accommodation here who do not have access to gardens or green space at home.

There is no space for children to play in Manor Park and it is not easy for parents/guardians to walk twenty/thirty minutes to the closest playground (Plashet Park). In all other areas of London there are playgrounds dotted everywhere but not Manor Park. Needless to say, the benefits are vital for child development; fun outdoor play, keeping children fit, active and healthy, encouraging exploration, growing children's social skills etc etc. Please can this happen!

Absolutely needed, there are no amenities for families and young children locally.

We are 100% in support of this 🤩. In most cases, parents must currently travel to other postcodes for play areas. Creating a playground in Manor Park would reduce the need for unnecessary travel in keeping with the concept of 15 minute neighbourhoods. Not only will it give the community an important place for children and families to meet & play safely, but it will also attract a boom of much needed business / footfall to Station Road as a direct result. Materials used should be sustainable and in keeping with the natural landscape - Greenwich Park playground is a brilliant example of this in action. There would be no shortage of local volunteers to help and maintain planting 🌳🌼🌱

I love this idea! It's a long way to other playgrounds, and this part of the Flats is less well-used than other parts, so a perfect way to improve it and make a focal point in Manor Park. I know I'd love to take my niece there as she grows up!

@Ellie Smith - Hi! I think there are a lot of residents here who want to see the area improved along similar themes and I think there is a lot we could do for the Manor Park area by working together as residents, both with the Council and as a residents group. There are definite trends in these forums and I was thinking it might be an idea to get a group of like-minded Manor Park residents together on a zoom (eventually in person) to discuss. I'm sharing my email - if this sounds like something you would like to be involved with, please drop me a line: claire.pattie@btopenworld.com

Excellent suggestion - there is a huge gap in Manor Park for playground, something made from sustainable and natural materials would be great!

This is desperately needed for residents and children in Manor Park. Walking to Dames Road or Plashet Park is not feasible everyday and means that local children miss out on frequent outdoor park trips with their parents which will undoubtedly impact their gross motor development. By having a local playground it will encourage both physical and social skills as well as helping children foster a love for the outdoors. I fully support this idea and hope to see it come to fruition soon.

This really is a much needed facility for all the young families in the area. It's a smart use of the space. I would love to see it happen.
