Newham High Streets Phase 1
Newham’s high streets are important everyday places, which serve their local communities and help to attract visitors to the borough. They are areas of considerable economic and social activity and have their own individual identities. The council’s recent Community Wealth Building and ‘Towards a Better Newham’ Covid-19 Recovery strategies place high streets at the heart of creating an inclusive economy that supports the health and wellbeing of the people of Newham. The Newham High Streets programme aims to create a clear delivery plan for Pillar 5 of the Towards a Better Newham Covid-19 Recovery strategy, which mandates that the council will work towards High Streets that support healthier and happier communities, embedding the principles of 15-minutes neighbourhoods.
Newham’s high streets have been impacted significantly by Covid-19 and we are hoping that this programme will help support their recovery. Newham High Streets aims to create a recovery pathway focused on the happiness and wellbeing of residents and businesses, to ensure they have what they need to deal with the challenges of recession and recovery. Given the recent challenges, the council and communities need to work together to collectively manage and nurture our high streets as a shared resource to build a fairer, greener, and better local economy.
You can read more about the project in the attached documents provided below on this page in seven different languages (English, বাংলা, ગુજરાતી, ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ,اردو , தமிழ், Polski).
Working collectively means that everyone has an important role to play in helping our high streets evolve to deal with the challenges they are facing now and in the future. We want to work with you, the people who live, work, and visit Newham’s High Streets, to identify a set of principles, potential projects, and develop cooperative partnerships that could guide future investment. As such, the programme is not a short-term quick-fix solution but rather a long-term commitment in facilitating change in Newham’s high streets through co-governance and collective action. Any projects that emerge from this process will require funding, which is yet to be identified. The project ideas that are most favoured will help us in actively seeking investment over coming years through funding bids, which if successful could improve the high streets in line with what local people want to see.
The first phase of the Newham High Streets Programme starting in 2020 will focus on Green Street, Forest Gate, Manor Park and Little Ilford.
